The Poetics of Gourmet: A Unique Interior Design by Joye Chuang

Creating Contrasts and Comfort in a Hot Pot Restaurant

Designing a hot pot restaurant that stands out in a bustling railway station is no easy task. However, Joye Chuang, an acclaimed interior designer, has successfully achieved this feat with "The Poetics of Gourmet." This innovative design combines strong contrasts, clean lines, and artistic elements to create a dining experience that is both visually striking and comfortable.

One of the key inspirations behind "The Poetics of Gourmet" is to provide strong contrasts for the color of fresh foods with clear divisions of the dining area, walkways, and the kitchen. Chuang wanted to create a space that not only attracts the attention of passersby but also offers privacy and comfort for the diners. To achieve this, the primary color scheme of the interior is light grey, distinguishing it from other shops in the vicinity.

The use of translucent panels and clear glass windows serves as a division between the interior and exterior, allowing natural light to flow in while maintaining appropriate privacy for the consumers. These elements also attract the sight lines of passengers, making the restaurant a visually captivating space within the bustling station.

The main wall of the restaurant features hand-crafted plant decorations combined with unique cookware, resembling paintings in a gallery. This artistic touch adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space, creating a visually stimulating environment for diners.

Technically, "The Poetics of Gourmet" utilizes a variety of materials, including primary flameproof laminate, hollow board, tile, PVC floor tile, iron metal mesh, stucco, and artificial plants. The dark grey panels hanging from the ceiling echo the seating below, creating a harmonious visual flow. The intersecting horizontal and vertical lines throughout the space further enhance the overall design, extending from the ceiling to the floor.

The hot pot restaurant is located in the lobby of the railway station, surrounded by numerous other dining options. Chuang wanted to create a space where people can not only enjoy a meal but also relax their eyes and bodies. By using a light grey color scheme and incorporating unique design elements, "The Poetics of Gourmet" stands out from its competitors, offering a visually pleasing and comfortable dining experience.

The project, which started in November 2018 in Pingtung City, Taiwan, was completed in January 2019. Throughout the design process, Chuang conducted extensive research on the use of translucent panels, clear glass windows, and metal screens to create a visually captivating yet private space.

Overcoming various creative, technical, and research challenges, Chuang successfully integrated vertical and horizontal lines on tables, chairs, countertops, and cabinets, creating a harmonious and visually appealing composition. The hand-crafted plant decorations and unique cookware on the main wall add an artistic touch, reminiscent of a gallery exhibition.

"The Poetics of Gourmet" by Joye Chuang has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its unique combination of contrasts, clean lines, and artistic elements, "The Poetics of Gourmet" sets a new standard for interior design in hot pot restaurants. Joye Chuang's innovative approach has created a space that not only attracts attention but also provides a comfortable and visually stimulating dining experience.
